With diversity an increasingly pertinent issue in post-conflict Northern
Ireland, the NICEC Diversity and Conflict Management (DCM) theme seeks
to address issues arising from the growing necessity to manage diversity
effectively.
NICEC-DCM emphasizes shared learning on Diversity and Conflict Management
issues between Northern Ireland and the wider European area.
Issues to be addressed include:
- Maximization of social inclusion in democratic processes
- Public policy
focus – meeting the needs of
diverse societies
- Social acceptance of policing and security sectors
- Education – adapting
the riches of a diverse society to educational programmes
The DCM Project Officer is Dr Billy Leonard.
DCM Activity
Dr Leonard facilitated
workshops in the ‘Dublin Action Agenda’ – a
conference organized by the European
Platform for Conflict Prevention and staged by
the Irish government as part of its 2004
Presidency of the EU Council.
Dr Leonard also
participated in a ‘Human Right to Peace’ conference
in San Sebastian in the Basque region of Spain and will take part in
a workshop with the East
West Institute on developing Moldova’s
place in a wider Europe. .
As part of the NICEC-DCM agenda, Dr Leonard plans to partake in a
fact-finding visit to Serbia-Montenegro as part of a wide ranging agenda
examining DCM issues across the wider Europe.
